Ferry Building (Embarcadero)
This is a foodie destination, and because this is San Francisco that means good beer too. Hog Island Oysters is one of the most scenic places to have a beer in the Bay Area, on the bay side of the Ferry Building. Check their schedule, they are currently open until 8 pm (6pm weekends) only. Hog Island serves four ales and beers, two from North Coast Brewing and two rotating taps. On a recent visit , for example, they offered Racer 5 IPA from Bear Republic and Prescription Pale Ale from S.F. brewery Magnolia. They also serve raw and roasted oysters, and clam chowders.
Just around the corner of the counter from Hog Island, towards the interior hall, is an organic beer bar that is part of Farm Fresh to You, a natural produce store. They offer a large array of bottled microbrews from organic breweries such as Bison, Butte Creek, Eel River and Wolavers.
On the street side at the Ferry Building’s north end is Taylor’s Automatic Refesher, a burger place which usually has all regional microbrews on tap. They are open somewhat later than the two listed above, so if you are not in the mood for oysters or organic salads, there’s usually a reasonable alternative on the corner of this architectural landmark.
If you were to be having a splurge dinner at the Slanted Door, you’d note they offer some lovely bottled Belgians to go with their acclaimed and flavorful Vietnamese cuisine.
Finally, note that this is where you get the Ferry to Marin Brewing, for a lovely day trip.
