Press Club (Powell)
The Press Club is hidden from the well trodden streets of downtown San Francisco. When you enter from pedestrian-only Yerba Buena Lane, you’ll likely be greeted by a host at the top of the stairs.
After an exchange of pleasantries and your explanation that you’d like to have a beer, you’ll descend into a large, dimly lit bar area. Do not stop at the first bar you see, unless it’s wine and spirits you’re after. Head left until you see another bar on your left. Here is where the beer magic happens.
The Press Club often features some of the more exotic beers you’ll find on tap. They have 24 taps and often feature limited release and craft beers from Italy, Germany, Norway, Belgium and beyond, as well as carefully selected domestic craft brews. Some are not readily available elsewhere in the Bay Area, and some may not make it to the printed menu. These don’t necessarily come cheaply, but few adventures do.
There is a large menu of small plates available to complement your beer selection.
Extras: If you want to sip elegant beer amidst pulsing music and casual-dressy young professionals, this is a weekend club destination to check out. If that’s not attractive, you might enjoy the Press Club on early evenings, earlier in the week, or by waiting for special beer events. It’s easy to cut through Yerba Buena Gardens Park to Thirsty Bear for a two stop pub crawl.
