Old Devil Moon (24th St, SF)

Old Devil Moon is a craft beer bar at the base of Bernal Heights hill in the Mission District. While ODM offers a full bar program and a small kitchen turning out Po’ Boy sandwiches and New Orleans inspired snacks, good beer takes center stage with 20 rotating taps and a beer engine for traditional cask ales. Small pours are available.

The interior is full of quirky “black magic” references to the old Sinatra song for which the bar is named. You may see the moon twinkle impishly on the beer list. Out back is a small non-smoking patio area for a breath of fresh air. TV is a rarity, projected only on special (usually sports-related) occasions. The beer list often includes hard-to-find beers, with an emphasis on California breweries.

Extras: A neon sign states that fortunes are told here so don’t be shy to ask.

The walk from BART will take you past three other beer stops, Rosamunde and Old Bus Tavern . With a one block diversion to Valencia St. you can find PiBar.  The 24 Divisadero Bus stops across the street from ODM on Cortland Avenue, and can whisk you over the hill to Barebottle Brewing Co., or just up to the crest of the hill where Healthy Spirits bottle shop and Holy Water bar provide more beer-geeky goodness, or where you can head up to the top of Bernal Hill on foot for a stunning view of downtown.
