Woods Bar & Brewery is third venue in the Bay Area at which to enjoy the unique, mostly one-off creations from Woods Beers. Much larger than either of its sister San Francisco venues (a 20-gallon nano-brewpub at Cerveceria de MateVeza and a tiny taproom at Woods Polk Station), this one has a three-barrel (93-gallon) brewery above a roomy bar with 12 taps will that feature the beer made upstairs and a few guest taps. Bottles and growlers of Woods and Mateveza beers are available to go. The remodeled former shoe store features large roll-up doors in front that, when opened, give the front half a feeling of an outdoor beer garden with a fireplace in the middle.
There are no TV’s and plenty of small tables in the long and narrow building. Empanadas from San Francisco’s El Porteño provide a tasty food option. Sometimes live music in the tiny brwery can be seen and heard from below.
Extras: You are a stone’s throw from the Fox Theater concert venue, so this is a great place to go before and/or after a show. The Paramount Theatre is a couple of blocks away. In the afternoon, the walk over to the pleasant park-rimmed Lake Merritt is just over half a mile.
