City Beer Store started in the South of Market neighborhood in 2006, revolutionizing the role of a beer specialty shop by being the first in California that included a bar. The current location provides a multi-tap bar with lots of select craft beer variety plus beer to go or to order online. Wine tasting rooms are an old standard, so it is amazing that this took so long. You either buy a can or bottle to enjoy at the bar before deciding to buy one to take home, or you enjoy draft-only selections. The bar provides a pleasant TV-free good beer stop in the middle of the vibrant shopping and dining scene that is Valencia Street.
The City Beer Store south of Market closed as of June 2022, due in large part to the pandemic. It is now located on Valencia St in the Mission District at its previously shuttered Amnesia music venue and bar. It is smaller than the Mission St. site, offering fewer indoor seats, taps, and coolers, but still offers a robust selection. There is a parklet for outdoor seating and there are no TVs.

From 16th Street BART, walk west on 16th to Valencia, then turn left and enjoy walking about four blocks along Valencia until you cross 19th Street.
Or, from 24th Street BART, walk west on 24th and turn right on Valencia Street. City Beer will be on the right at 853, past 20th Street. You can come from either BART station, it’s about half way.
