Liberty Ale–Anchoring the SF Beer Scene For 37 Years

Whenever you get an opportunity to visit Anchor Brewery in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, you are keenly aware that you are stepping into history.  The pictures on the wall, the old posters and the large copper mash tuns make the history come alive.

Last night, Anchor threw a little party to celebrate the 37th anniversary of Liberty Ale. It would be 20 or more years from then before we heard of David “Big Poppy” Ortiz, Kate Winslet, or Tiger Woods who were born in 1975. While those of us who were alive then were watching John Mitchell, H.R. Halderman and John Erlichman sentenced to jail for their role in the Watergate scandal, former Anchor owner Fritz Maytag was dreaming up a beer to celebrate this nation’s 200th birthday.

In this 5-minute video, Anchor brewmaster Mark Carpenter takes us back to that time.
