Bay Brewers Claim Awards at Inaugural California Craft Brewers Cup

SF’s nearby brewers made out well in the first annual California Craft Brewers Cup event, organized by the regional brewers guilds around the state. 

Thursday evening at the California Craft Brewers Association’s fifth California Craft Beer Summit, an industry gathering and trade show for independent brewers in the state, winners took the stage to collect a new set of brewing awards in a ballroom in Long Beach.

The SF Bay Area and nearby communities will see some new hardware hanging from taproom walls soon.

Alvarado Street Brewery of Monterey set the bar with a gold medal for Monterey Beer, a Standard American Lager;

Discretion Brewing grabbed a glimmering gold for Shimmer Pils, their German-Style Pilsner;

East Brother Beer Co. of Richmond garnered a gold medal for Bo Pils, a Czech Pale Lager;

Faultline Brewing Co. of Sunnyvale nabbed a silver for their Spring Bock, in the Helles Bock or Maibock category;

A silver went to Standard Deviant Brewing, of SF, for their Kölsch;

Gold wen to Del Cielo Brewing out of Martinez for Guava Dreams, a fruit beer;

Gold came to Peter B’s Brewpub of Monterey for Inclusion Amber, in the English-Style Brown Ale category;

Standard Deviant Brewing picked up a bronze for their Porter;

Triple Rock Brewing Co. of Berkeley earned a silver for Cleverpenny, a Scottish Export style beer;

Del Cielo Brewing, was back on stage for the gold for Smooth Ride, a Foreign Extra style stout;

Seismic Brewing Company brought a silver back to Sonoma County for their Oatmeal Stout;

Alvarado Street Brewery snagged a second gold for Champagne Hopi, a Brut IPA, in the experimental IPA category, followed closely by

Drake’s Brewing Co.’s silver for Aroma Coma, their popular Rye IPA;

Gilman Brewing Company claimed a gold for Champ Rochaux, a Specialty Saison;

Ferment.Drink.Repeat – FDR Brewing Company of SF got a bronze for Barbados Grapefruit Saison;

Triple Rock Brewing Co. as back for a bronze for Bid Adieu, a Belgian Table Beer;

Faction Brewing Company got a silver for Defcon I, their smooth Trappist Quadrupel;

Soquel Fermentation Project found gold with Red #2 with Raspberry, a Flanders Red Ale;

Oakland’s Original Pattern Brewing Company was awarded a gold in American Wild Ales for Berrya 51;

Soquel Fermentation Project got bronze for Golden Sour #4 With Mango and Passionfruit in American Wild Ales;

Seismic Brewing Company got a bronze for Steinstrasse, in the category for wood- and wine barrel-aged beers;

Drake’s Brewing Co. picked up a silver for Santa’s Brass, for a Barrel-Aged brew (stored in barrels previously containing distilled spirits i.e. brandy, bourbon, etc); and

Discretion Brewing garnered a bronze for Ten Million Flowers, a Honey Beer.

The winners were chosen from 1,266 beers entered by 194 California craft breweries.

Rip Current Brewing of San Diego County took home two golds and a bronze, including a Best of Show — a big golden trophy — for its Breakline Bock. 

Brewery of the Year went to Crooked Lane Brewing out of Auburn for taking the most medals, contributing to the great haul from the brewers of the Sacramento region and garnering their regional guild honors for the most winners.
